Earlier last month, NYPD turned in some evidence including video footage to the federal court. It's supposed to show the patrol car, which struck Ryo, cruising with lights on. But we don't really know, because even the Oyamada family is prohibited to watch this video. The NYPD had their former lawyer sign a protective order, which only allows the Oyamada's lawyer and the nominal plaintiff, whom the Oyamadas met after the accident, view the evidence. The Oyamada's new lawyer, Steve Vaccaro, is working to modify this protective order. (More details in the Gothamist: The NYPD has claimed video evidence exonerates them, yet it remains hidden from the public) The new lawyer, Mr. Vaccaro has represented a seriously injured cyclist and pedestrian and also has fought for civil rights and employment disputes. He also serves as an Advisory Council of Transportation Alternative, which is an active group whose goal is to achieve Vision Zero. Now on, he will lead the Oyamadas to find out the truth behind Ryo's death.
