Ryo Oyamada would turn 25 years old on December 5th this year. No one thought he would not get any older than 24 years old last year. He would have celebrated this day with his family and friends in Japan.
Ryo’s family was in New York to meet their lawyer this week. They were able to visit Ryo’s accident site and gather with Ryo’s friends, celebrating his birthday with candles. During their two hours of stay at the site, people gave them kind words while walking by.

At that night, Ryo’s friends visited the family’s hotel and had a surprise party for Ryo with them. Last winter, when Ryo was in New York, he mentioned that he wanted to eat hot pot, but he had to give up, because Japanese ceramic pan is not cheap in New York. His friends remembered this and they decided to have the party for him this year. Even though Ryo was in New York only for three months, he had built great friendships. The picture is Ryo’s 25th birthday gift from Ryo’s friend to his family.
It says “Ryo, You Will Always Be Remembered”.
I could not help but feel how big the family’s loss was again. Ryo’s mother gave birth to him on that day 25 years ago. His family had loved their youngest member and grew up together. It is not fair that his life was taken away so suddenly. He must have had many many things he wanted to do in the future.
I hope the family will be able to find out why and how he had to die in the near future, at least.
