Ryo Oyamada's friends and family got together to make lanterns for Ryo's third memorial on Nov. 29th and Dec. 5th.
I attended one on Dec. 5th, which could be Ryo's 27th birthday. I would like to share about the gathering here.
At the last memorial, we made candles together. The colorful candles were beautiful and we all loved them, but the snowy and windy weather in NY made it hard to keep the candle lit. So this year, we made lanterns to keep the light during the memorial.
As it was last year, it was the first time for all of us to make the lanterns. So we taught ourselves while making them. Everyone did their best to make one, and It was very fun to watch Ryo's friends discuss what messages to carry on to the lanterns.
The lanterns, which they made small holes little by little, are very unique and humorous. In the end, we lit the candles in the lanterns. It was very beautiful as you can see in the picture.

The gathering was very peaceful. We really had a good time sharing our messages on lanterns and talking about memories with Ryo. The finished pieces with lights are showing their love to Ryo as well as a strong message, "NO MORE TRAGEDY".
The Oyamada family said "We were moved to see the lanterns, which everyone left a message on, all together. We are very happy to have this gathering with Ryo's friends this year again." It must be a great birthday gift to Ryo too.
