The Oyamadas had Ryo's memorial in Ryo's hometown in Japan this year. Ryo's family and his friends got together at a beach, which Ryo visited with friends often, and lit the lanterns they made.
Ryo's father gave a short speech, saying "I think Ryo is still in New York, but Ryo should hear our voice, thinking of him together." Everyone thought of the memories with Ryo and wished Ryo to rest in peace.
I still wish this whole thing was just a bad dream. Sometimes I think back to the time Ryo was alive and seeing his journey in New York on his facebook page. February 21st 2013, everything changed all of the sudden. I still remember blanching as I read the first email from Ryo's sister, telling about Ryo's death and that they are looking for a lawyer in New York. It is still painful to think of the family's feeling while traveling to New York to confirm their dear son's death.
Ryo's mother once said that it is probably Ryo who cannot believe his death the most.
Ryo was alive in New York. He's probably never felt so alive before, learning new things everyday in New York. How could the young healthy man go so alive to death instantly?
I hope that the law suit will bring the answers that the Oyamadas were looking for, so Ryo can rest in peace. And I demand that the police department will change the way they stand. We cannot let this tragedy happen again.
