In New York, it is easy to find cases which the drivers have not been charged, even if the driver had no license or was drunk driving or reckless, or even if it was the fatal accident. It is because of the lack of proper investigations. Why do the police immediately announce “no criminal suspects” without telling the result or the details of the investigation to the victims’ family or the victims?
October 18th is the two years anniversary of Mathieu Lefevre’s death. He was a Canadian artist who lived in the city of NY. His arts are praised as unique, humorous and interesting by many artists who were expecting him to have a bright future as an artist. He was also an experienced cyclist. He was struck and killed by a truck while riding his bicycle at age of 30 in Brooklyn.

Just after the incident, the truck was found near the scene, but the police were still searching for the driver.
The driver was found later, however, the police concluded there was no criminality.
Mathieu’s mother was continuing to make phone calls to the NYPD, but nobody responded to her. She then learned that the police had announced “there was no criminality” by the press release, instead of from the NYPD. The family demanded to share the information with them about their son’s death, the investigation, and the reason why they found no criminality, but the police didn’t answer them and they also did not charge on the driver.
The family requested for information under the Freedom of Information Law (FOIL), but the NYPD refused to share the information. So the family sued NYPD for the violation of the FOIL. After that, the NYPD opened the information, and the documents showed the photographs of the crash scene, despite the fact that the police had indicated there were no photographs because the AIS camera had been broken at the investigation. Furthermore, the footage, which was released later, showed that the driver did not turn on his signal to turn right.
The driver who killed Mathieu has testified that he did not know that he struck and dragged Mathieu.
Why can the NYPD hide the information from victim’s family? Why is this behavior accepted in NYC?
The pre-trial conference for Ryo’s case has started, but the police have not released the information because the incident is still under their investigation. It has passed over eight months, but the family does not know what they are investigating and why they cannot release the information about their family member’s death.
Traffic safety is an important factor to our lives. The road is shared by cars, pedestrians, cyclists, children, and elderly people, and we all following rules to keep everyone safe.
We all wish to prevent the avoidable accidents for a safe life. Some might think it is just a traffic accident. But it is a big issue we face everyday.
Even though my friend, Ryo, left this world, he will be always with me in my heart.
It is same as Mathieu Lefevre. His art works have been loved in NY.
They did not leave in vain. We can learn from their lives and deaths.
I think one of the things we can do is to know about the incidents and hand down their stories to the other people.
Mathieu’s family is also asking for donations for their travel fund from Canada to New York. This will directly help the family. http://mathieulefevre.org/
Finally, the newest picture from Ryo’s accident site was uploaded on Queensbridgeus. Autumn has come to New York. They keep it clean as always and displayed fall flowers. I really appreciate for the kindness.
